| Informal conversations with the local community, a formal needs assessment and a recent online survey have all identified an important need for an accessible and independent home for LGBT resources and programmes in York Region. For many years, the absence of this kind of facility has been an ongoing issue for both members of the LGBT community and service providers.
Gay York Region is pleased to announce that the Regional Municipality of York, through their New Agency Development Fund (NADF), have recently approved funding which will enable the creation of this facility early in 2012, to be named 'My House – Rainbow Resources of York Region'. It will be located on Yonge St in Richmond Hill and will provide a place where members of the LGBT community can gather, create community and access a range of resources. It will also become the home for several support and social groups, and act as a source of support and referral to other programs and services across the region.
Physical space for this new facility has already been secured and work has already started on furnishing it with required supplies and resource materials. Early in the new year a steering committee will perform essential planning tasks, including the creation of by-laws and a mission statement, to enable incorporation as an independent, not-for-profit organization with charitable status.
It is envisaged that the 'My House – Rainbow Resources of York Region' facility will be launched with an open house event in February or March 2012. Full details of this event and all other developments regarding this initiative will be published on GayYorkRegion.com as and when they become available.
